In this video, what's old is new. We'll look at the restoration process in reverse! We'll take a modern image, and explore ways to simulate the vintage look of vintage photographs. While there are plug-ins that can do some of this work for you, I rather like the hand-crafted, unique results that you get when you experiment with different effects and techniques, and that's exactly what we'll do here. Tilt-Shift in Photoshop and Photoshop Elements

01/03/2015

Photoshop CC had a major upgrade to the Blur Gallery, among the additions was a new Tilt-Shift filter. This can make the effect really easy to make. In addition, Photoshop Elements also has a new way to make a Tilt-Shift effect, it's quick and easy but not quite so adaptable. In this video I look at both methods and demonstrate the 'old school' manual way to create the effect for those with older versions of the software. [More]

Illustration or Comic book Effect in Photoshop

03/01/2015

In this video I demonstrate a technique of using Smart Filters to make a highly versatile illustration or comic book effect in Photoshop. In this example I'm going for the children's story look, but with a few tweeks and edits it could look more like a comic strip or sketch. The image used here is from our friends at Fotolia and is #74069436 - superhero child by eelnosiva. I'd love to see how you use this technique so feel free to drop me a note on Twitter or Facebook with a link! [More]

Create A Template To Display Your Image As A Mounted Canvas In Photoshop Part 2

27/08/2014

In my last tutorial we saw how to create a reusable template to display our artwork as though they were mounted on canvas in situ. The base image I used is a sofa against a wall, both in neutral colours. Whilst this works well most for most images, what if we want to see how the picture would fit a particular location: a client's office or a married couple's lounge, perhaps? In this article I’m going to take the template idea further to enable us to alter the colour of both the sofa and wall colour, giving us far more freedom to match the artwork to specific decor. As before, this will be completely non-destructive as we'll be using adjustment layers and masks to create the effect. We can continue where we left off the last time. If you didn’t see the article, you can access it here, or you can just work with the base image – link below – and add in the artwork later. [More]

Lightroom and Photoshop – Creating Panoramas

19/08/2014

Once you have the images imported into Lightroom, you can send them directly into Photoshop from Lightroom with a click of a menu; it’s easy. And the advantage here is that once you save from Photoshop, your newly created panoramic image is imported automatically back into Lightroom’s catalog. Lightroom and Photoshop cooperate well together in many ways! [More]

Lightroom and Photoshop – Lens Corrections

05/08/2014

Lightroom and Photoshop can work together in powerful ways, and each seems to have strengths where the other has weaknesses. Lightroom has a powerful new feature called “Upright,” found in the Lens Corrections panel of the Develop Module. This feature was a welcome addition in version 5, and it makes very quick work of a variety of perspective problems. Sometimes, especially with very wide angle shots, Upright doesn’t quite do the job, and we need to bring out the big guns. [More]

Create A Template To Display Your Image As A Mounted Canvas In Photoshop

17/07/2014

Today’s Photoshop tutorial will show you how to create a custom reusable template to display your images as though they have been wall-mounted and photographed in situ. There are many reasons you might want to create an image like this, Here, we’ll be creating the effect of a canvas print but the technique could easily be adapted to make framed prints as well. The secret behind the technique is the use of Smart Objects, which enables us to quickly change the image being displayed, whilst retaining the shadows and effects used to make the canvas. [More]

Lightroom and Photoshop – Smart Editing

08/07/2014

When you make adjustments to your raw files in Lightroom, you have the flexibility and the power of non-destructive edits – and unlimited undo steps. But, when you edit in Photoshop, the changes are written into the pixels and the result is a raster layer, ready for editing. However, Lightroom and Photoshop have another editing path available – one that preserves the raw data during the handoff, and maintains the non-destructive flexibility. Lightroom and Photoshop are made to work together, and there is more than one way to move files between them. In this video, we will examine the workflow in which a raw file in Lightroom is sent over to Photoshop as a Smart Object. [More]
