The capability to adjust filter settings and/or mask a filter provide for a number of creative possibilities. However, I'm surprised at the number of folks who don't know that Smart Filters also have blending options. [More]

Selective Smart Sharpening in Adobe Photoshop

20/02/2013

One of the wonderful (and often confusing) things about Photoshop is that there are many ways to do just about anything. Sharpening is no exception and almost everyone will have their favourite method.. This is my current favourite for its flexibility and the results it achieves. This method is both easy and effective and perfect for saving as an action to be applied to any image at the click of a button. One of the benefits of this method is that the amount of sharpening and even where is sharpened is all adjustable after application. [More]

ACR to Photoshop Edits Aren’t Set in Stone

18/02/2013

I was talking to a photographer the other day and I was saying how much I love Adobe Camera Raw (ACR), and that I’ll do 90% of what I want to achieve there before moving into Photoshop. He argued against this stating “Once you’ve clicked Open Image in ACR your adjustments can’t be changed”. By default this is true, but not when you use my beloved modifier keys…. [More]

Your Phone Camera Photos Suck (Blur Removal Software Review)

13/02/2013

No matter how good the settings on your phones camera are, they probably aren’t going to help out of focus or blurry images. You might try to take multiple shots of whatever you’re photographing, and hope at least one comes out halfway decent – that’s usually my main M.O., but if you are stuck with blurry or out of focus images, what can you do? Creating a Chiseled Text Effect in Photoshop and Photoshop Elements

11/02/2013

We'll be using Photoshop layer styles to achieve the effect as well as the somewhat obscure Type Mask tool. If you're not familiar with this tool, it's a little like a cross between the Type tool and Quick Mask; we can type our text as usual but when it's committed, instead of creating a layer with the text it creates a selection; this is perfect for the technique as we do not need to work on the text directly. You can follow the original tutorial using the link above but change the dimensions to 1000x200 pixels to create the correct document size. If you don't want to start the image from scratch, it can be downloaded here. [More]
