How To Create A Rippling Flag Using The Displace Filter In Adobe Photoshop

06/01/2016

In this tutorial we'll be creating the effect of a rippling flag using custom artwork and one of Photoshop's oldest distortion filters, Displace. The filter uses a monochrome image map to distort the pixels of the target layer based on the tones of the map. The brighter or darker the tone, the more the pixels of the image are pushed horizontally or vertically. This is great for creating the appearance of an object or text following the contours of a texture. [More]

The Unsung Hero of the Latest Photoshop Update. Thanks John Nack

21/12/2015

The latest Photoshop update has caused a lot of interest, and why not, the list of updates is pretty impressive! You can find list below of some of the major updates, but there’s one on the list, tucked right at the bottom, that I’ve be dreaming of since goodness knows when! I remember the then Principal Product Manager at Adobe John Nack telling Bert Monroy on his Pixelperfect podcast that this feature was coming soon… if memory serves this was in 2009, when CS4 was the current version. But, true to his word, we got it, and although Mr Nack is no longer at Adobe I’d like to thank him for getting it started… [More]

Advanced Compositing With The PixelSquid 3D Photoshop Extension

03/12/2015

In this tutorial we'll look at the advanced features of the plugin, where we can import a high-resolution layered Photoshop PSD file that replaces the low-resolution preview. As well as being highly detailed, the PSD version gives us the ability to blend the 3D object into the scene using specially created layers that allow us to easily control the colour and tone as well as being able to quickly select and adjust the different components of the object. The Lightroom J Trick

27/11/2015

There are various versions of this quick and easy contrast fix for Lightroom doing the rounds on the internet (I got the inspiration from Mastin Labs’ post) and its about Tip Squirrel had their very own version of it! This contrast fix isn’t for every image but is really helpful on those tricky flat images that don’t want to play ball. And, secondly, this “fix” works best with RAW images. [More]

How To Create A Surreal Image With Adobe Photoshop Mix

11/11/2015

Working with the Adobe mobile apps gives you the freedom to create images wherever you are, either in their entirety or for comping ideas and refining them later. Using Adobe's Creative Sync enables you to transfer your work between your devices, both mobile and desktop, so you can start your project on the phone and add the finishing touches in Photoshop when you get home or to your studio! Tinting With the Photoshop Gradient Map Adjustment

09/11/2015

There are many ways of tinting an image, and many of those ways I employ regularly, sometimes trying multiple methods on a Tint-Scary-Gradphotograph to get the best result because, as you regular users know and you newer to Photoshop will soon learn, every image is different and no one method will work – or work the same – 100% of the time, and different methods, of course make for different results. For the purposes of this article, however, I’m focusing on the Gradient Map adjustment layer for tinting, and using one custom gradient with the crazy hex value combination [More]

Beauty in Decay – Repairing a Photo with Photoshop

29/08/2015

It’s a funny thing about me; if I see a damaged picture, sometimes I just really, really want to fix it. It’s almost like my fingers start tingling for the Wacom pen so I can get started. It doesn’t happen every, single time, but when it does good things usually happen. So, I decided to take a little time and fix one of them… About 6 (working) hours later, I was done with the first one I picked. It wasn’t one of the worst, but it sort of spoke to me. [More]
