Tuesday Mask Tip

Happy Tuesday everyone,

This blog has been going a few weeks now and I’d really like to know what you do and don’t like about it. Do you read the blog or do you use TipSquirrel as just a links page? How helpful are Tuesday Top Tips? (I openly admit I’m no trainer). Your help would be much appreciated, thank you.

Tuesday’s Top Tip

This is another of those slap the forehead tips that just seem so obvious…

Masks are a wonderful tool for layers adjustments or selective colouring, but they can be a great design tool too.

It will come as no surprise to know that the following examples took no more than 2 minutes each. But it does show how big effects can come from the mask.

This is my starting image, no masks.

With the background set to the yellow of the paint I put a mask onto the image layer and shift-clicked (to paint in a straight line) around the outside. The brush was a wet media brush with a big spread and angle jitter.

This time, I ran a Fibres filter then a Swirl filter on the mask

This time I painted the corners very quickly with a wet media brush, made a selection (Ctrl/Cmd+Click) and then ran a cloud filter

Have a great day, see you Wednesday, don’t forget to let me know what you like and don’t like about the site and blog. Thank you.

Based in the UK, TipSquirrel has what some have described as an 'unnatural obsession' with Photoshop. Although he spends his day either in Photoshop, reading about Photoshop or watching Photoshop Podcasts he's still not able to cobble together a reasonable tutorial himself. Fortunately, he has a talent for persuading very clever and articulate people to do that on his website. An avid Twitter fan TipSquirrel can often be found sharing links from TipSquirrel.com and other sites. This account also has him jibbering away about tea, scones, biscuits and anything else that randomly pops into his tiny little brain. For pure Photoshop links, TipSquirrel has a second Twitter account, Photoshop_nut. TipSquirrel is afraid of crows.

You’ve got some great stuff here. I like the layout – simplicity is what makes it, the white surroundings draw the attention to the content

The ability to “automagically” link comments to Twitter is cool (plus I have a particular passion for that word!)

The Tuesday Top tip is cool too – keep it up, I gave you a shout out on the podcast today too! :D
